What to Wear (and Not Wear) to a Massage Appointment

August 13, 2026 · 1 min read · By Ember Spa

This comes up in almost every first-time conversation, so here’s the plain answer.

What to wear to the appointment itself

Anything comfortable is fine — there’s no dress code for arriving. Loose, easy-to-change-out-of clothing just makes the transition into the room a little smoother.

What happens once you’re in the room

You undress to your own comfort level, in private, before the therapist returns. Some guests prefer to keep underwear on; others don’t. Either is completely normal, and it’s entirely your choice — not something a therapist will ever direct.

Draping, and why it matters

Throughout the session, you’re covered with a sheet or towel at all times, with only the area actively being worked on uncovered. This isn’t a minor courtesy — it’s standard professional practice at any legitimate massage studio, and a good therapist will explain it before you even ask.

If you’re still unsure

It’s a completely normal question to ask out loud when you book or when you arrive. There’s no version of this that a therapist hasn’t already been asked before.
