First-time nerves before a massage are common, and usually come down to not knowing what to expect. None of it is complicated — here’s what actually helps.
Eat something light beforehand
Arriving very hungry or right after a heavy meal can both make it harder to relax face-down on a table. A light meal an hour or two before your appointment is a reasonable middle ground.
Skip the intense workout right before
Fresh muscle soreness from a hard training session can make deeper pressure less comfortable than it needs to be. If you can, leave a few hours between a tough workout and your massage — or save the workout for after.
Arrive a few minutes early
Rushing in right at your appointment time carries that rushed feeling onto the table with you. A few minutes to sit, breathe, and actually arrive makes a noticeable difference in how quickly you settle in.
Say what you need, even if you’re not sure how to phrase it
You don’t need the right vocabulary. “This part feels tight,” “can we skip my feet,” “a little less pressure here” — all completely normal things to say, at any point during the session, not just at the start.
What we do at Ember Spa
Every session starts with a few minutes of conversation about how you’re feeling, so the treatment gets shaped around that instead of a generic routine. There’s no wrong way to prepare — showing up is most of it.
